JIM JARRATT
Приєднався 2 жов 2010
I am a former actor, a writer and a musician. I play lots of instruments but perform with a tiny Canarian Timple, which nowadays lies at the heart of all my music. I have written and had published various walkers guides to the North of England, and writings in magazines and papers, including the Yorkshire Post and the Guardian. I have been writing songs, recording and performing stuff for over 40 years. Some of my songs are sad, some controversial. Most are funny. Now I have a new medium - UA-cam. Now retired I can make songs and movies at my leisure. Spielberg better watch out!
AS THEY PULLED AWAY Jim Jarratt
AS THEY PULLED AWAY
(Grace Darling).
There are many poems and lyrics about Grace Darling, this is my contribution to the genre. Her genuine heroism gave her an unsolicited (and privately unwelcomed) veneration, which in its dwelling on the idea of her saving all those lives single handedly, created what we would call today fake news and merchandising.
The rescue of the survivors from the wreck of the Forfarshire on 7th Dec. 1838, was in fact a collaboration between Grace and her father, a decision reached after careful deliberation and a cool analysis, which recognised not only the risks but also the dreadful immediacy of the impending situation. They did not hesitate. They rowed out and picked up most of the survivors, then while Grace attended to them, her father and three of the surviving crewmen went out there a second time to recover the rest of them. When the lifeboat finally arrived at the wreck, all they found and recovered were floating bodies, and then realising it was too dangerous to get back to the mainland, headed for the lighthouse, where all parties had to sit it out for three days until the storm subsided!
Grace only lived another four years, dying in the October of 1842 from consumption. She was only 26 years old. But all 'lifeboatmen remember'. Her legacy will endure as long as lives are at risk on the seas.

ADVICE TO A YOUNG LARKMAN. (Bob Pegg)Advice to a Young Larkman in the original version may be found on Bob's album 'The Last Wolf' (1996). Bob based it on the recorded testimony of Mr. Jack Ingham of Luddenden as part of his 'Calderdale Voices' oral history project in 1976/77. Jack Ingham was born around 1900. His father John, was landlord of the Lord Nelson Inn in the nearby hilltop village of...

GOODBYE KIRKGATE MARKET Jim Jarratt 2023

Goodbye Kirkgate Market.... This video has been a long journey in the making! I wrote the song in 1973, publishing it two years later in my 'View From Wibsey Slack' song anthology. It was performed on the local folk circuit for many years, before I finally got round to recording it in 2013, as part of a CD called 'Squashed Hedgehogs in the Road'. The sudden relevance (and irony) of the current ...

In the spring of 2020 it was announced that the human race was poised on the edge of a global pandemic.Thereafter, Covid 19 spread to Europe (and through tourism to the Canary Islands), on the fast wings of international air travel. The Midgley Pace Egg Play is performed on Good Friday at various locations throughout the Upper Calder Valley, West Yorkshire. It was originally performed in post war times by Students of Calder High School, but its long upheld tradition goes back much further than that, its origins being lost in the mists of time. Like all such events it is a Rite Of Spring, it's central moment being a Death a...

Jeremiah DERMOT Murphy was a farmer, a character and a folk performer extraordinaire. I first encountered him in the early seventies, when bored with the ubiquitous guitar, he was learning to play the piano accordion and we quickly became good mates. He became a brilliant accordionist, but he was also equally at home with melodeon, concertina, banjo, tin whistle, fiddle and bones. But that was ...
MARY THE MAID OF THE INN. Jim Jarratt 2021
Переглядів 1373 роки тому
Mary the Maid of the Inn was one of the great urban myths of the 19th century Britain. The story told here probably took place (if it did so at all), back in the late 17th or early 18th century, location being ‘your nearest ruined abbey’! In Yorkshire it was most popularly associated with an inn near Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, called the ‘Hark to Rover’, (now in the Abbey House Museum!) In the v...

Never got to actually talk to him but saw him quite a few times growing up in the 80s. I used to shout hello and he would wave and carry on on his way. Growing up i always wondered where he was going.
First heard this song sung by Bob Pegg in 1976 and he credited Jim with it. My wife heard Bob’s version and started singing it a few years later. It was a few years more before I heard Jim singing it, just found out about Jim’s you tube and video channel last night while in conversation with Jim. I am going to enjoy a trawl through the rest of the videos.
how wonderful! i am really enjoying your hard work, its great!
Jim, I loved your video and the music, I met him at my parents house on Rawdon Road, Horsforth once in the 90s lovely man 🙂👍

I wonder, do you love cats? You know, it's a life-or-death question😀! My darling!🙃! I've got ten cats and a dog, border collie.
I do like cats, we had them when I was a child, and I befriended one or two down the years, but I am essentially a dog person - (check out my videos!) I like and respect all creatures of every kind. At the moment the only dog in my life is Roxie, my daughters boxer! She is a force majeure!

Why did this poor boy die ? How old was he? It's a great grief. I've got nine cats and one dog.God forbid!
Fudge was my sons dog and we looked after him from time to time. When we had flooding at my sons house he stayed with us for six months. I loved him deeply. He had a heart murmur towards the end of his life, but had to be put down recently when his back legs failed and he was in great pain. I made the video in memory of him.
